PADDLING DOWN RADUNIA DOWN TO GDANSK
Location:
Radunia River passes through the Pomeranian Voivodeship and is the left-hand tributary of the Mołtawa River. The basin’s area covers 837 km2. Radunia originates slightly upstream from the Stężyckie Lake. The river ends its course in Gdansk by flowing into the Mołtawa River in two places. Paddling down Radunia gives the possibility to see the most beautiful corners of the Kaszubskie Lake District. Kaszubska Switzerland is the most magnificent part of the area and includes pure lakes, deep gorges and steep hills. The trail is both one of the most difficult and splendid in Poland.
Radunia statistics:
Length of the river: 104 km (64 miles)
Length of the trail: 98 km (60 miles), Radunia Loop 40 km (25 miles)
Estimated time of canoe trip: 4 days (including Radunia Loop)
Skill Level:
The upper section of the trail is easy, there are rare portages, numerous lakes, the trail is perfect for inexperienced paddlers. Mountainous type of the central section requires high paddling skills. The least popular section starts upstream from Żukow and is recommended for enthusiasts who are not afraid of burdensome portages.
Camping Conditions:
The riverside of the upper section is well developed with numerous camping sites, a significant number of holiday resorts and agritourist farms. The central section is the naturally protected area with a total ban on camping. Due to low tourist traffic, the infrastructure in the lower section is underdeveloped.
Description of the trail:
This untamed and extremely busy river is a true paradise for people seeking for water leisure, adventure and sport challenges. Because the river is different on particular sections, both experienced and inexperienced paddlers will find the river attractive. Radunia trail is divided into three water sections with radically different skill levels.
The complex of lakes connected by short channels, which together with several other reservoirs constitute the so called Radunia Loop, is the first section. Radunia Loop, a chain of lakes forming an irregular circle, looks exactly like a necklace from the bird’s eye view. Radunia River is an axis for this area and together with lakes and small streams forms a magnificent artery flowing through the system of post-glacial channels. The area comprises of 25 water reservoirs of different sizes located in the Kaszubski Landscape Park. All of them are fully navigable.
You can canoe round the whole loop without going out of your kayak – starting from Stężyca, through Borucino, Chmielno down to Lubowisko Lake which is located in the vicinity of Stężyca. Depending on the direction of canoeing and place where we hit the river, we will canoe downstream or upstream the channels connecting given lakes. Narrow river sections demand some physical strength and energy. Kaszuby Switzerland, common name for the region, is famous for its landscape and natural qualities.
The fact that waters of this highest ground of the Kaszuby Lake District flow down into all directions is a hydrological curiosity. Reda and Łaba flow northwards, Radunia flows eastwards to Mołtawa, southwards through Wierzyca and Wda to Wisła and westwards to Słupia and Łupawa giving a rise to numerous water trails. We need two days to canoe round the whole loop. The trip usually starts in Stężyca which provide good public transport connections and accommodation facilities and finishes in Ostrzyce. Majority of the local towns actively hold to the tradition.
Radunia Loop is perfectly tailored for family canoe trips, it is not difficult and bewitches with exceptional scenery – a great idea for weekend canoeing.
Second part of the trail is a gorge section – flowing into the Ostrzyckie Lake, Radunia is a separate river already. Here, the gorge section of the trail starts. Radunia meanders through deep and inspiring valley to reach a picturesque gorge northwards from Szymbarskie Hills and Somonin. The gorge is often referred to as “Babidolskie Gorge,” “Radunia Gorge” or “Radunie Ravine”. The water flows extremely swiftly here, numerous rapids and fallen trees add up to the wilderness of the scenery. According to PTTK and PZK classifications, this section is classified as the mountain water trail. 10 km long passage through the gorge is definitely an unforgettable experience. The whole section has to be covered in one day, because it is naturally protected and camping is forbidden. Żukowo is the border city of Radunia Gorge.
Third section of the trail is least attractive, most paddlers decide to finish their trip in Żukowo.
Further part of Radunia is more and more regulated, the river passes through the barrier lakes: Łapinskie, Kolbudy, Goszyn and Straszyńskie driving the turbines of 8 water-power stations. The trail in this section is quite bothersome due to long portages, water is less clear.
Downstream from Pruszcz Gdanski, Radunia forks and water flows mainly in the channel of so called New Radunia. It is the Poland’s oldest canal. It was built by Theutonic Knights in the 14th century. The riverbed of Old Radunia leads to the Mołtawa River and further to the centre of Old Gdansk. This stage for persistent paddlers takes up to 3 days. Landscape is unexciting, numerous portages can be felt.
