Section description

Everything begins fairly calmly on Lake Węgorzyno – but from the river's very first minutes you can feel the tension. The Słupia narrows, branches and rapids appear, and the current becomes more and more restless. You paddle among the trees, surrounded by forest; the sounds of civilisation fade, leaving the rush of water and the sound of boulders striking the bottom.

The Sulęczyno Gorge – the heart of the route

The Gorge begins suddenly, without warning. The kayak jolts up, the water slows only to gain momentum. You drop into a sequence of natural boulders, drops and a tight channel. This is where the river turns into a mountain stream – elemental, wild, raw. It's not a water slide, but living water with character and temperament.

Log jams, stones and split-second choices

The uniqueness of this route is determined not only by the drop in the terrain, but by the number of obstacles: fallen trees, trunks just below the surface, stones you can't see until you're above them. Sometimes you have to duck, tilt the kayak, push off at the last moment – or trust the river and go.

Scenery that draws you in like the current

The whole stretch runs through the buffer zone of the „Słupia Valley" Landscape Park. The forest here is old, damp and quiet, the banks overgrown with moss, the water clear and cool. It's a frame straight out of a nature documentary – and in it you rely on your own decisions and instinct.

Who is this section of the Słupia for?

  • this is not a route for tourists – it's a challenge for seasoned paddlers,
  • it requires experience in log-jam trips and the ability to read the water,
  • 2 permanent portages, numerous boulders, trunks and fallen trees – full concentration,
  • the reward is the legendary Sulęczyno Gorge and the wild buffer zone of the Słupia Valley,
  • a section so special that many walk back with the kayak to run the Gorge once more.

Useful tips

Is this section for beginners?

Definitely not. It's technical log-jam kayaking – boulders, drops, a tight channel and obstacles. We require real experience. For a start, choose „My First Time in a Kayak" or „The Gentle Łupawa".

What is the Sulęczyno Gorge?

It's the most spectacular part of the Słupia near Sulęczyno – a sequence of natural boulders, drops and a tight, swift channel in which the river takes on the character of a mountain stream.

How many portages are there?

There are 2 permanent portages on this route. Added to these are natural obstacles (log jams, boulders) cleared with technique or a short exit from the kayak.

What gear is best for log jams?

Short, manoeuvrable single kayaks (touring and whitewater) give the most control. Two-person kayaks require a well-coordinated, experienced crew.
