Kamienica – a technical, fast kayaking trip for advanced paddlers (a tributary of the Słupia)
The Kamienica is one of the four largest tributaries of the Słupia. If you're going kayaking for the first time or planning a trip in a tandem – this is not the river for you. Here what counts is experience, quick reflexes and a single kayak with a spraydeck.
Bristling with obstacles and beautiful, fast rapids – a river full of surprises, for those who want something more than calm paddling.
Location
The Kamienica flows out of Lake Kamieniczno near Gliśno. It runs through Tuchomie, comes out onto fields and hides in the forest. Bristling with obstacles and fast rapids it flows to Kamieniec, and on to Gałąźnia Mała, where, by the hydroelectric plant, it joins the Słupia as its left tributary.
Route difficulty and campsites
The route is quite strenuous, although the obstacles are easy to bypass and portages are occasional and short. The river requires experience because of its fast current and a mass of surprises. Don't choose tandems – especially on the upper section that's a mistake; for a single kayak we recommend a spraydeck. The tourist base practically doesn't exist: camping in Tuchomie (by the International Meeting Centre and the school), then wild in the forest (3–4 tents), and in Gałąźnia Mała a large, beautiful campsite (no sanitary facilities; nearest shop ~2 km, in Gałąźnia Wielka).
Route description – what awaits you on the water
This is not a river for raw greenhorns in tandems. Only from Kamieniec can you try your hand in a tandem – and only at high water. Above that the river is suitable for single kayaks and for skilled paddlers; this section can discourage or even frighten a novice.
The fastest stretch: the power station – Kamieniec
The section from the hydroelectric plant to the trout farm in Kamieniec is very fast and varied with trees and stones sticking out of the river. A moment's inattention or an ill-judged manoeuvre and you land in the rushing, cold water. The trip can be continued down the Słupia from Gałąźnia Mała all the way to Ustka.
